My wife is a human camera. She records life's experiences in living color and full detail. Growing up on a little farm in the Ozarks she had a childhood full of memorable memories. For example, the winter nights that her Mom and Dad would always go out to the barn to milk the cows, lantern in hand, they didn't have any electricity. Now, their house was in a hollow in the woods where the darkness was really dark, so Karen kept watching that lantern. She remembers one time when she overheard people talking about a panther in the area and the adults said that you would know the panther was around when you heard its sound. Something that sounded like the scream of a woman. Well, one particular night with Mom and Dad at the barn and as Karen stood there with one hand on the screen door of the house and the other hand on her tiny little sister, she heard the scream of the panther. A thousand thoughts and fears must have raced through her little mind. But Karen said, I knew my parents were okay as long as that light was steady. I just kept watching that lantern for a steady light.
Well, I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A WORD WITH YOU about THE STEADY LIGHT.
Now, at sometime in our lives we're all that little girl in the door of that farmhouse - it's dark, and frankly it's scary, and something we fear is close. It maybe that kind of time in your life right now. You need a steady light that gives you something that you can count on in the darkness.
Our word for today from the Word of God, John 8:12. Listen to this, "And Jesus said, 'I am the light of the world, whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of Life.' " Now, Jesus said, "I am the light." Here is a secure guarantee, "if I'm your light you will never walk in darkness." Jesus said He is the steady light we're looking for. Now, you've lived long enough to have had the other lights probably let you down. People who were going to be there for you but the light went out . . . a job that you could count on, that was suddenly gone
. . . a religion that maybe just hasn't met your need when the need has been the greatest. And now, perhaps in a dark time, Jesus - The Light - stands before you, beckoning, extending His invitation, "Follow Me." Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.
You see, those who commit their lives to Jesus Christ, live under the wonderful promise that He made, "I will never leave you or forsake you." When no one else can be there, Jesus is there. When the situation is bigger than you are the Son of God is bigger than the situation is. When earth has no answers Jesus gently leads you through the confusion and the hurt. But you can't see the light as long as there is a wall between you and Him. That wall, that separation, is what the Bible calls sin. We don't have any power to remove it but in the words of the Bible, "While we were still sinners," while the wall was still there, "Christ died for us." He died for you to tear down your sin wall by paying your death penalty for running your own life and now He waits for you to say, "Jesus, I'm putting my total trust in You to rescue me from my sin, from the penalty of my sin."
And if you're not sure that you've begun this relationship with God's Son, would you please let me send you a booklet called "Steps To Peace With God" and a letter that we'll give to you - the secrets of having a great relationship with God.
It was a dark and scary night when that little girl found security because she could see a steady light out there. Well, for you and me that security is Jesus Christ, our never leaving Savior. Follow His light right through your life, and one day right through death, and into His Presence.
